MAGNETIC FORCE FEEDBACK TECHNOLOGY
What is it and how does it work?
IRIS describes the products created using this technology as force generators: a machine that converts an electrical signal into force by creating motion. The force generators are comprised of two key components: a stationary electromagnetic coil and a movable permanent magnet.
The permanent magnet hovers inside the coil and is free to move along the central bore of the coil. The negative pole of the permanent magnet is drawn to the positive pole of the electromagnet, and vice versa. If the polarity of the electromagnet is reversed, the permanent magnet is drawn to the new pole locations, and the permanent magnet moves.
Multiple permanent magnets and electromagnetic coils are stacked together in the linear force generators. The photo shows three coils interacting with three permanent magnets. The coils switch their polarities twice for each magnet: once to pull in the magnet, then again to push out the magnet. This process is repeated and the shaft slides inward.
A good analogy is the wave at a football game; as the people lift their arms, the wave propagates. As the coil's polarity switches, the permanent magnets are propelled forward.
Linear force generators come complete with a shaft and a control circuit. The permanent magnets are loaded into the shaft. The shaft is nonmagnetic and does not contribute to the magnetic fields; instead, it transmits the motion from the permanent magnets to the user.
The control circuit delivers current independently to each coil. This circuit can change both the polarity and the strength of the magnetic field of the coils. This configuration allows for limitless control.
IRIS is developing a range of sizes to meet more applications. Currently, IRIS force generators can output loads ranging from 7.5 lb to 45 lb.
Magnetic force feedback technology can also be used for rotation as well as translation.
Because the magnets never come in contact with the coils, the shaft moves with unprecedented smoothness. This elegant system offers low latency, absence of cogging and torque-ripple, and virtually frictionless operation.
